How it works

1. Assessment

Time: 60-90 minutes

The first visit will involve either an assessment or a comprehensive speech and language evaluation.

An assessment will help determine individual strengths and weaknesses. It includes a brief written report and non standardized scoring of a child’s functioning level, parent interview, clinical observations and recommendation as to whether or not services are necessary.

A comprehensive speech and language evaluation will help determine individual strengths and weaknesses in multiple areas of speech and language, interaction-based skills, and early literacy. It includes a written report and standardized scoring of a child’s functioning level and recommendation as to whether or not services are necessary. The use of standardized assessment tools, parent interview, and clinical observations are used to assess the child’s performance.

2. Therapy

Time: 30-60 minutes depending on age and attention span of the child.

The early sessions are often focused on establishing rapport using child directed activities.  As trust is built, the clinician introduces more drill play which offers opportunities for practice, and clinician directed activities to target assigned goals and objectives.

Sessions for younger children consist of a predictable schedule of activities and experiential learning of targeted skills.

For older children, their interests are incorporated into the sessions to increase participation and carry over of skills.  Skill acquisition and generalization (using a new skill across all environments) is strongest when a child is engaged and excited about the learning and activities.

Data on assigned goals and objectives is collected at every session and made available to parents in progress reports or as requested.

A multidisciplinary approach to teatment is very important. As such we can work collaboratively with Birth to Three, the school district or any other service providers.
